💡 Thought of the fortnight: Learn something new every day. Knowledge keeps the mind young, and a young mind never stops growing.

This fortnight’s global topic: the MSME finance gap

According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC, World Bank Group), micro, small and medium enterprises account for roughly 70% of employment and 50% of GDP worldwide, on average. Yet the unmet financing need in emerging markets and developing economies is about US$5.2 trillion for formal MSMEs and US$2.9 trillion for informal MSMEs. IFC also notes that 70% of MSMEs in emerging markets lack adequate financing to thrive and grow.

Left: bars showing a 5.2 trillion dollar formal and 2.9 trillion dollar informal MSME financing gap. Right: curve showing 1 percent daily improvement compounds to 37.8 times in a year
Left: IFC estimates of the MSME financing gap. Right: illustrative compounding of daily learning.

A simple calculation

Adding the two IFC figures gives about US$8.1 trillion. Informal MSMEs are 2.9 / 8.1 = 36% of that gap. In plain words: more than one rupee in every three of unmet need sits with businesses that are not formally registered, so they find it hardest to borrow. Registering on the free official portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) is the first step to be visible to lenders.

What it means for an Indian founder

Learn daily, stay young

The right-hand chart is a thought experiment: if you improve by just 1% a day, you end the year about 37.8 times better (1.01³⁶⁵). If you slip by 1% a day, you end near 0.03 of where you started (0.99³⁶⁵). Real learning is not that tidy, but the lesson holds: small daily habits compound. Read one page, learn one number, ask one question. That is how founders stay sharp and young at heart.
