Udyam Registration: Why Every Small Business Needs It

If you run a small shop, workshop, food unit or service business in India, Udyam registration is one of the most useful things you can do. It is free, it is done online, and many MSME schemes and bank loans ask for it.

What is Udyam registration?

Udyam registration is the government’s official recognition of your business as a micro, small or medium enterprise (MSME). You receive a registration number and a certificate that you can show to banks, government departments and customers.

Why it matters

  • Banks and schemes such as MUDRA, PMEGP and CGTMSE often ask for it when you apply for a loan.
  • It helps you access subsidies and support meant for MSMEs.
  • It supports your claim for priority in government purchases and tenders reserved for small businesses.
  • It gives your business a formal identity.

What you need to start

  • Aadhaar of the owner or proprietor
  • PAN and GST details, where they apply to your business
  • Your business address, activity and bank account details

Tip: register only on the official government Udyam portal. The registration itself is free, so do not pay agents who promise a “fast” certificate for a fee.

Rules and thresholds can change, so confirm the latest requirements on the official portal before you register.

What to do after registration

Use the registration to find the scheme that fits you and prepare a bank-ready project report. Our guide Government Schemes, Loans and Subsidies for MSMEs and Start-ups in India 2026 shows you how, with a scheme finder, three sample project reports and a 30-day application plan.
