Agriculture Market Research in India
Farmer, dealer and agri-input surveys that turn fields into decisions.
India’s farm economy is not one market. A paddy farmer in Thanjavur, a cotton grower in Vidarbha and a dairy keeper in Punjab buy inputs differently, trust different people and pay on different cycles. Companies selling seeds, crop protection, fertiliser, farm machinery, animal health or rural consumer goods therefore need local evidence before they spend on launches, pack sizes or distribution.
What agriculture market research covers
- Farmer surveys: crop mix, acreage, input usage, brand awareness, buying triggers and satisfaction.
- Dealer and distributor surveys: stocking, credit terms, margins, who farmers ask before buying. See our dealer and distributor survey guide.
- Agri-input and crop-protection studies: product trials, usage and attitude, loyalty and switching.
- Animal health and dairy research: veterinarian, para-vet and farmer behaviour, product preference.
- Rural consumer panels: repeat measurement of villages and households. Read rural market research methods and challenges.
A simple five-step design
- Define the decision. New product, price band, pack size, dealer incentive or region entry?
- Choose the universe. Crop, season, land-holding size and district. Public data from ICAR and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare helps to set the frame.
- Size the sample. Use our sample size guide.
- Field in the local language with supervised back-checks.
- Analyse by segment: small and large holders, irrigated and rain-fed, dealer-influenced and self-decided buyers.
Questions worth asking farmers
- Which brands do you know without prompting, and which did you buy last season?
- Who influenced the purchase: dealer, neighbour, company representative, social media?
- What would make you switch, and what stops you trying a new product?
- How do you pay: cash, credit from the dealer, or after harvest?
