Tamil Nadu market entry: what to research first
A checklist from a Chennai-based research firm
1. Define the decision
Are you choosing a plant location, a distributor, a retail launch or a service office? Each needs different evidence.
2. Size demand from public data
Start with Census, NSSO and state government statistics, then add industry association data. Cross-check with a small primary survey.
3. Pick pilot cities
Compare cities on customer density, supplier base, logistics and local competition rather than choosing by name recognition.
4. Map local competitors and channels
List competitors, their price points and how products reach customers, through dealers, wholesalers, modern retail or online.
5. Research in Tamil
Consumer interviews in Tamil reveal preferences that English surveys miss. Use trained local interviewers and translation checks.
6. Check rules and incentives
Review state industrial policy, licences and incentives that apply to your sector with a qualified adviser before committing capital.
7. Pilot before you scale
Test price, pack size and distribution in one or two cities, and measure repeat purchase before expanding.
