Qualitative vs Quantitative Research: Which Does Your Business Need?

“Should we run a survey or talk to a few customers in depth?” It is one of the most common questions brands ask before a study begins. The honest answer is usually both — but understanding what each method does well helps you plan a study that actually answers your business question.

Quantitative research: how many, and how much

Quantitative research uses structured questionnaires with a statistically representative sample to measure things — market share, awareness, satisfaction scores, purchase frequency, willingness to pay. It answers “how many people think X” with a number you can defend to a bank, a board or an investor.

Qualitative research: why, and how

Qualitative research — in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, ethnographic observation — explores motivations, language and behaviour in the respondent’s own words. It is where new ideas, product concepts and messaging get pressure-tested before they are put in front of a large sample.

When to use which

  • Launching a new product concept or ad idea → start qualitative, to shape it
  • Sizing a market or tracking brand health over time → quantitative
  • Understanding why a metric moved → qualitative, to explain a quantitative finding
  • Investor or board reporting → quantitative, backed by qualitative quotes for colour

The combined approach most Indian studies actually need

Most feasibility studies, brand studies and consumer research projects in India work best as a sequence: a short qualitative phase to understand language, categories and triggers, followed by a quantitative phase, at scale, to size and validate what was learned. This is how ARS structures most of its consumer and B2B engagements.
