Ph.D. and Academic Research: 8 Tips for Reliable Field Data Collection

For many Ph.D. scholars, the hardest part of research is not the theory — it is collecting good data in the field. Weak data can weaken an entire thesis. Here are eight practical tips drawn from ARS’s experience supporting academic and institutional research.

1. Start from your research questions

Every question in your questionnaire should link back to an objective or hypothesis. If it doesn’t, remove it. Shorter questionnaires get better answers.

2. Use validated scales where possible

For attitudes, satisfaction or behaviour, adapt established scales from published studies instead of inventing new ones. Examiners trust validated measures.

3. Plan your sample carefully

Decide your population, sampling method and sample size before fieldwork, and justify them in your methodology chapter. Our sample size guide explains the basics.

4. Translate and back-translate

If respondents speak Tamil or another regional language, translate the questionnaire and then translate it back into English to check that the meaning has not changed.

5. Always run a pilot test

Test the questionnaire with a small group from your target population. You will discover confusing questions, missing options and how long the interview really takes.

6. Train your investigators

If others collect data for you, brief them on every question, how to probe without leading, and how to record answers consistently.

7. Build in quality checks

Back-check a share of interviews, look for patterns such as identical answers, and clean the data before analysis.

8. Follow research ethics

Take informed consent, protect respondents’ privacy and follow your institution’s ethics requirements.
