The numbers at a glance (August 2026)

What dealers actually sold: FADA retail data
Retail registrations tell a slightly different story from factory dispatches. According to FADA, retail sales in August 2026 were:
- Two-wheelers: 17,14,610 units, up 19.69%
- Passenger vehicles: 4,02,398 units, up 16.14%
- Commercial vehicles: 90,769 units, up 14.45%
- Three-wheelers: 1,22,281 units, up 8.64%
FADA described it as the industry’s biggest-ever August, but also called for OEM billing to stay in line with real retail demand so dealers do not pile up stock. Its outlook for the September to November festive period was ‘cautiously optimistic’.
September 2026: car makers keep the momentum
Passenger vehicle wholesales in September 2026 were estimated at about 4.6 lakh units, roughly 21% higher than a year earlier. Maruti Suzuki’s domestic sales were 1,85,252 units against 1,35,711 a year ago, and Hyundai Motor India reported its highest-ever monthly total of 77,916 units including exports. Maruti’s April to September 2026 sales reached 10,80,240 units, compared with 7,95,446 in the same period last year.
Why is demand strong?
The GST 2.0 rationalisation from September 2025 lowered the tax burden on small cars, mass-market two-wheelers and three-wheelers, and its effect is still visible in year-on-year comparisons.
Dealers expect bookings to rise from September to November, especially for two-wheelers and new SUV launches.
FADA reports a historic shift towards alternative powertrains in passenger vehicles, and EV retail sales rose 53% in August.
A bigger picture: FY2026
FADA’s full-year data for FY2026 shows two-wheeler retail above 2.14 crore units, up 13.40% and back at its pre-COVID peak. Passenger vehicles crossed 47 lakh units for the first time, growing 13%. Tamil Nadu, with Chennai as its auto hub, is one of the states that benefits most from this growth through vehicle assembly, components and exports.
