Choosing a market research company in Chennai
Ten questions that separate firms that run their own fieldwork from firms that resell it, and a brief you can copy before your first call.
The 10 questions
Ask whether interviewers are the firm’s own team or a subcontracted agency, and who supervises them on the ground.
Chennai needs Tamil at minimum, often Telugu, Urdu or Hindi. Get the language list in writing.
Ask which Census boundary is used (Corporation or Urban Agglomeration) and how quotas are tracked live.
Look for geotagged verification, back-checks by phone on a share of interviews, and removal of failed interviews.
A good partner challenges the brief, pilots the questionnaire and explains each change.
Ask about NDAs, who sees client names, and how respondent data is stored and deleted.
Ask about the ESOMAR code and Market Research Society of India practice, and how consent is recorded.
Ask for a relevant case study and a reference you can call. Check whether the logos shown are real clients.
Raw data, cleaned data tables, a written report and a presentation are different deliverables. Agree the list upfront.
Ask for a named contact and a review point halfway through fieldwork.
Online panel or field interviews?
An online panel is quick for smartphone users but cannot reach households without them. Face-to-face and telephone interviews reach older, rural and lower-income respondents and suit studies such as retail audits, scheme verification and customer satisfaction. Many studies combine both. A firm that runs only one method will naturally recommend that one, so ask each firm why it chose its method for your brief.
