MSME Business Confidence Is Falling: How to Read the SIDBI Index Before You Plan Your Next Quarter

SIDBI’s latest MSME Outlook Survey shows that business confidence among India’s micro, small and medium enterprises fell for the fourth straight quarter in April to June 2026. Cost pressure and demand worries were the main reasons.

The numbers

  • The MSME Business Confidence Index (M-BCI) stood at 59.3 in April to June 2026, down from 59.8 in the previous quarter and 63.8 a year earlier.
  • The survey covers about 1,200 MSMEs across manufacturing, trading and services, and all three sectors moved lower.
  • Sales and profit margins were the main pressure points.
  • The Business Expectations Index (M-BEI) was 60.1 for July to September 2026 and 61.2 for April to June 2027, so firms still expect a gradual recovery.

How to read an index like this

An index above 50 means more firms feel positive than negative. A fall from 63.8 to 59.3 does not mean business is bad. It means optimism is shrinking. Averages also hide differences: a textile unit in Tiruppur and a food business in Madurai may feel very different pressures.

What a small business should do

  1. Check your own demand. Ask 30 to 50 regular and lapsed customers what they bought, what they skipped and why.
  2. Test price response. A small price test shows how much volume you lose when costs force you to raise prices.
  3. Know your cost drivers. List the three costs that grew fastest and plan for them.
  4. Plan cash for the festive season. Stock and working capital decisions are easier when you know your expected sales range.

National indices guide the mood. Your own customers decide your sales. ARS Market Research Services helps MSMEs run short, low-cost customer and pricing studies, and we explain the findings in plain language.
